Question Why Don't They

I'm looking for an answer as well as an experiment to do to the question, "Why don't the leaves of a maple tree, let's say, in Florida change color like the leaves in New York"? I've found information as to why leaves do change color, but I haven't found anything as to why that doesn't pertain to Florida, where leaves go from green to brown, skipping any color change in-between. Is there an experiment a 4th grader can do with this? Thanks for your help.

I'm not exactly sure about this, but when leaves go instantly from green to brown means that they dies instantly, while if the green leaf goes to yellow then red then brown, means that it died slowly. Green being the most living and brown being completely dead.

Talking Well

It might have something to do with choryphyll, because when there is not enough energy, the plants cannot photosynthesise to make energy to stay alive. You may want to try to grow plants in dark and light places to see a small scale example.

I know for certain that the reason why leaves don't change color in some places is because of the climate / temperature. For example, in hot equatorial jungles, leaves never change color (ie they are green all year round). So it seems to me you need to investigate the question of how climate affects plants in this way. I am almost certain you'll find information in the encyclopedia on this website if you look around enough.

all the best

It might have to do with the soil. If the soil in Florida differs from the soil in New York, it may have something to do with it

Talking Oh yeah!

I forgot about the temperature. The plant will grow in the sunlight or darkness, but darkness will be much much much slower.

the cold weather makes the stem of each leaf swell up causing it to cut off nutriants and the leaf dies and falls off the tree. I have no idea why I know this
