Default Stalactites and Stalagmites

Hello, I would greatly appreciate any help. My 3rd grader's project is stalactites and stalagmites. He made his Epsom salt and water solution. He set up the project last night using Hemp (natural fiber cord). The Hemp was soaked in the solution before putting the ends in 2 jars. The cord between the 2 jars is dipping down below the water level. This morning, the cord is stiff and dry. Is this supposed to happen or is the cord/string to remain wet the whole project? I have heard cotton and wool do not draw the water up and that Hemp or paper twine do? Help Please!
