Talking I think

I think that they use it so that there is more bread. Since yeast rises, it makes more. If they didn't use yeast, the bread would turn out flat.

Post Re: Yeast and Bread

Well, yeast is actually a one-celled organism. Yes, the yeast found in the little packets at the supermarkets are living things! Yeast thrive on sugar. They eat this sugar and then turn it into energy. This makes a waste called carbon dioxide. When the yeast eats the sugar in the bread, the carbon dioxide is released, making tiny bubbles in the bread. This is why the dough rises. When baking, the yeast is killed and what is left is the fluffy bread you are used to. Have you ever eaten a slice of bread and noticed that there are circular indents in the side? Those are proof of the bubbles that the yeast made. Hope that answers your question!

Post Carbon Dioxide

No, we do not eat the carbon dioxide. It is eliminated when the bread bakes!

Lightbulb Cool Experiment involving Yeast!

Hey, try this!

Question - What will happen if we combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup yeast and let sit?

Materials -
1. 1 cup yeast
2. 1 cup sugar
3. 1 medium sized bowl

Hypothesis - The yeast will eliminate the sugar and a foul odor will be released in the process. There may also be a few bubbles.

Procedure -
1. Combine yeast and sugar
2. Stir mixture
3. Let Sit
4. Observe
5. Repeat

Try it! What do YOU think will happen. Write it down! Make drawings! Look at the end results underneath a microscope! Will the yeast get bigger or multiply? Post it here!!
