SmartyC is truly a scientist!
Lightbulb 18 or older

You are going to have to do a survey, but also you have to put them in groups. Like males, females, and race.

Then ask the question "why". If you find that most smokers do start smoking before 18 ask "Why do they start?"

Is it temptation, pier pressure, or following example.

Hope your project is a sucess, because it is very good.

sciencefreak is a brilliant scientist admired by others

according to me, most students start just to look 'cool' and be in style. It's a really silly reason to start smoking. Even though cigarette packs show a statutory warning saying,
"Cigarette smoking is injurious to health", people don't take it seriously.

Since nicotine in tobacco is addictive, it's difficult to stop smoking once you start so the best way is not to start at all. I hope you try and get this message across while doing your survey. All the best!

The Newtons and friends were taking tea
Beneath the boughs of an apple tree,
When a falling fruit landed on the
Head of the head of the family.
Mrs. Newton cried, 'Well deary me!
That could've caused an injury'.
But clever Isaac alone could see,
The situation's true gravity.

i think this might be a problem, in a way, this is a really great project, about smoking, since it is really bad for us, if you can find a group of adults you know who is older than 18 and is smoking, than you can ask them, but if you want to do this, you really have to survey alot of people, not just 20 to 30, you know. Anyway, the problem i said i saw is that this is like a survey, and i will said this in the firendliest way possible, this isn't really a science project, so maybe you could alter your project a little or something...

good luck!!
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

...For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

Default I am so confussed!

Hi there again~

Like most of the adults I have spoken to, some of you are saying great project and others are saying......well, good question, but not really a science fair project. I just don't know! Please help me tweak it so that it is a project! One of my teachers said "any question is a science fair project". I am not really getting any feed back or support from my school and I just want to do a good job. And by the way, this project is not required of me.

Thank you so much!

dreamerofeternity would have made Einstein proud! dreamerofeternity would have made Einstein proud!

The problem is really the age. All you're doing is asking for the age.

My suggestion is, compare the time someone has been smoking to his/her health (cardiacvascular system, health habits (exercise, eating, sleeping),), and to how many times they smoke a day. You can measure a person's cardiovascular health by making them run for the same intensity for a same amount of time. (with a treadmill) and then count one minute of their pulse after 2-5 minutes of rest. You bascially want to check how long it takes their heeart to return to resting rate.

To measure health habits, you can do general survey. Do you know about BMI? Body mass index? You'll need their weight and height.

So you're asking a few questions. For the first question, you're asking "Does prolonged smoking damage the cardiovascular system and at what rate?"

For the second question, "How aware do general smokers, longterm smokers, or shortterm tend to be?"

While doing a survey, ask them how many times they smoke a day to answer the question "Does the amount of smoking increases with prolonged time of smoking?"

Good luck!

(Hope I'm not too late.)
