Unhappy need some help

I'm in 10th grade
I need some chemistry project about

the reaction between 2 substances

plz help !!

Ah! Do you know Hess' Law? That Law states that if there are two chemical reactions, the sum of the energy released by the two chemical reactions equal the energy released if the two chemical reactions are combined. You can play around like this, and play with endothermic reactions (reactions absorbing heat) and exothermic reactions (reactions releasing heat.)

For example, when a liquid acid reactions with a liquid base, a salt and water forms. It is exothermic. When a solid base dissolves in water, it releases energy. How about you put a solid base in a liquid acid? The energy released should be the same if you add the energy released by the previous two reactions.

You need it to be controlled in a calorimeter. Let's say a styrofoam cup and a thermometer. Also, you have to make sure that there is the same amount of base (I would recommend NaOH--easy to get to, and HCl as the acid--easy to get) and the same amount of acid for each of the three reactions. Also, make sure that the amount of water stays the same in each reaction. Like for your first reaction, you should mix 50 mL of base and 50mL of acid so it's 100mL. Then for the second, you should dissolve the same moles of base in your 50mL base into 100mL of water. Then for three, there should be 100mL of acid, but containing the same amount(moles) of acid as your first reaction, and add the same amount of solid base as the other two.

If you're confused by what I said, I strongly recommend you to research what are moles and what is molar concentration or ask your teacher for help. I can't explain it well enough (b/c you'll need to look at a periodic table, have a calculator, etc.) It's a pretty easy experiment when you understand it.

Also, you'll need to calculate the number of calories released in the reactions, which is by the equation Q=mc(delta T). Q is the amount of calories, m is how much water you have (which is to be constant for all three equations), c is always 1 for water, and delta T is the change in temperature, which you will measure with a thermometer. With this, if Q is positive, it releases energy. If it is negative (decrease in temperature), it is endothermic, which means the reaction took heat/energy away.

When you understand, remember you can play around with the reactions outside of acid and base leading to creation of a salt. This is
acid+base-->salt and H2O process is called neutralization. Try making reactions that take energy, and figure out how much energy it takes by performing two reactions at once--one that gives and one that takes. Then perform the reaction that gives heat by itself, the substract the two to find out how much heat the endothermic reaction took.

I strongly recommend it! Good luck! (I believe you can do it! It just takes a lot of patience and research work to understand it. I know it's a lot to digest, but give it a chance.)
