Default bone mass

I want to do my project on healthy bones. I saw where you can soak a chicken bone in vinegar and another in water and it will decompose. What will be left? Is it the calcium and that's what makes a heathly bone?

Wonderful experiment... Actually, I would like you to try more than vinegar and water. How about you ask the question why does the vinegar have that impact on the bones? And answer for yourself your question. Is it the acid of the vinegar (vinegar is also called acetic acid). Try other stonger/weaker acids, such as HCl, milk, orange juice (ascorbic acid, citric acid) maybe some bases, such as baking soda, NaOH...etc. What about sugary products (soda)?

Actually, here's a fact I know of, but I don't know if it's actually relevant to what vinegar does. Acid increases the solubility of calcium. HCl is a strong acid. So if HCl is more effective than vinegar (a rather weak acid compared to HCl), then you know it's the acid that is dissolving the calcium.

Good luck!
