Default High school science project

I had an idea of altering chlorophyll to make it more effective such as changing the atom of magnesium to an atom of nickel or something like that. However, I don't know if with my limited capabilities, I'll be able to do so. Is there any other method of altering chlorophyll? Is this a doable project for a tenth grader? If not, what other projects relating to biology can I do that are complex enough for a high school student and something very possible that I could do. I need a lot of help and I would appreciate an answer. Thank you.

Default Altering Chlorophyll

That sounds like a pretty complex procedure. I've not tried it myself but have come up with some research on the topic. http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=151466

Is this what you were looking for?

Hey, I know a lot about chlorophyll, but i'n not sure what it is that you are looking for .

Are you looking for the effect that chlorophyll has on an atom of magnesium changing to an atom of nickel ?

You will have to go to the library and ask for, the biological of elements ( the inorganic chemistry of life) by J.J R. Frausto Da Silva. Good luck to you.

Default What is chlorophyll?

Wisteria, chlorophyll is the green coloration in leaves of plants, that allows plants to "make food". Essentially, the chlorophyll absorbs sunlight and uses that energy to synthesize carbohydrates using Carbon dioxide and water molecules. See http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/motm/chlorophyll/chlorophyll_h.htm for a good overview of the process of photosynthesis.

Talking just trying to help

thanks mad I learnt it last year but I just don't have a clear head yet... well you can take different leafs and see their shape... or you can soak one leaf in a liquid and see how it is affected

Altering chlorophyll is very hard...

However, hemoglobin, a molecule in blood, is very similar to chlorophyll (the magnesium is substituted by iron). However, it has completely different characteristics from chlorophyll. Hemoglobin is used to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide. However, this already proves that changing one molecule in chlorophyll could change the whole function. However, you might be able to compare the two and look at the differences and similarities, thought it'd be hard to make an experiment out of it.
