Default Tsunami

We have all heard of the usual natural disaters. Earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, and the occasional flood. But one of the most dangerous and lesser-known dissaster is the tsunami. Most countries don't even have a way to predict them because they are so rare. Any comments?

I think it became more known after what happened last year. In Hawaii they have buildings built so the tsunamies will go right through them

Smile water gypsies

remember that beach in phuket, thailand where the tsunami began? there were what they called water gypsies that lived there. when those gypsies observed that the water in the shore dried off and some fishes were left ashore. specifically they found out what is coming.

Default Tsunami

Well, I must agree that the regions of the world that were near oceans and fault lines didn't even think about them untill what happened last year. Well, I hear that they are trying to develop a way to help predict them. I hope it works.

I did a Science Fair Bulletin on Tsunamis last year. It was declared the best by most friends, but it wasn't an experiment, so I couldn't enter it into the fair. What I came up with early this year was using a Pyrex Container and simulate an earthquake with a vibrating... "thing". Or since plate tectonics say that earthquakes are caused by sudden snaps (or the such) in Earth's crust, you can use something heavy and flexible to simulate the "snapping". Plastic containers work just as well, as long as they're transparent instead of the trunslucent ones you see at the dollar store.

Default That seems interesting.

That sounds cool. I'll have to try that sometime. Except, I though that the plates were in the ocean. Did you know that tsunamis start far out in the ocean, away fom land?

Lightbulb Tsunami science fair project

Very interesting thread, Satfire!

Btw, for anyone interested in a Tsunami science project, you should know that a tsunami can be generated by any disturbance that rapidly displaces a large mass of water, such as an earthquake, volcanic eruption, landslide or meteorite impact. However, the most common cause is an undersea earthquake. An earthquake which is too small to create a tsunami by itself may trigger an undersea landslide quite capable of generating a tsunami.

Tsunamis can be generated when the sea floor abruptly deforms and vertically displaces the overlying water. Such large vertical movements of the earth's crust can occur at plate boundaries. Subduction earthquakes are particularly effective in generating tsunamis, and occur where denser oceanic plates slip under continental plates in a process known as subduction.

For those of you who are interested, take a look at our encyclopedia here http://www.all-science-fair-projects.com/science_fair_projects_encyclopedia/Tsunami for more info.

The Tsunami that hit on boxing day 2004, took many lives in Thailand, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. It was indeed a very sad day. I had a friend who was in Sri Lanka holidaying, when it happened.
