Cool Grade 6- Sound detector. (but please don't make it too easy, it's an 8 week project)

Hi everyone! I really need help on a science project. I changed my mind about speakers and now I'm trying to make a Soundwave Detector. Question-

Can a soundwave be detected by a device made of ordinary items?

Please help me any Mentor, Mad Scientist or Regualr member out there!

Default Sound wave detector

You're basically trying to build a microphone for your science project.

What sort of waves are you trying to detect? Very small (low amplitude) waves? If that's the case, household materials may not suffice.

Cool

No I'm sorry mad scientist, the device i would like to make is not a microphone. If you have ever seen a spy set from any toy store, (toys R US), then you might know of a device from when you clap or make any large sound, it will react. Do you know of any other ways to make this? Please say yes!
