Default need to know if another chemical is possible

my son is doing a science project on enviromental pollution, and needs HCl to show when the water becomes unsafe. The problem is I cannot buy HCl on line, the school has to and the teacher will not accept responsibilty for the chemical. He said I should find another item to use to replace the HCl. He did not know what that was and I do not know how to find a replacement chemical or solution? The project is from your web site, can you help?

Default HCl is an acid

HCl is an acid, hydrochloric acid.....and when it is concentrated, it is nasty stuff. I am surprised that the teacher wouldn't give a small amount a very dilute solution in water. The best alternative is simply vinnegar, which is 5% acetic acid in water. It will do the same thing.
