thoughts: have a tray (6" deep?) filled to top with sand
drop different ***** like golf ball, basketball, tennis ball etc from height say like 8 feet.
place a stick across the top edges of the tray above the depression left. measure down from that stick to the bottom of the depression

Default Great suggestion Catwood

You've demonstrated quick thinking! Simple yet elegant! I like your suggestion!

Another way of doing it is to use a transparent (eg. glass) tray, and do as you suggested. Measure the distance between the bottom of the ball and the bottom of the tray every time you drop a ball of different size.
