Default HELP! Who has a cleaner mouth - dogs or humans?

We have 2 dogs and 2 humans to use as subjects. Is this enough do you you think? We plan on using sterile swabs to take samples from the mouths of our subjects, but what kind of "solution" do we use and are we going to see bacteria? What kind of bacteria and how will we know who has the cleaner mouth? HELP! I'm thinking we should pick another subject. Thanks for any help offered.

it is a good project idea but there are a lot of things that could get in the way, like the type of dogs what you and the dogs eat etc.

Well I should say it will be hard because the only bacteria in a dogs mouth can only effect other dogs. Also, you may want to use something else for geting the bacteria out of the subjects mouth, then rub the item on a slide and look under the microscope to see what's going on inside. Also, if the person hasn't brushed or had their teeth cleaned, or used mouthwash in a while, it will definately throw the experiment off alittle.

Default Dog saliva and bacteria

Take a look at this recently added project. It's spot on!

Hey I'm doing the exact same project. I'm just going to watch my cotton swabs and record what they look like each day. And if at the end I can't tell which one is cleaner I'm just going to refer to my research I did. For example I'll say something like "After doing my research I discovered it's not whose mouth is 'cleaner' but the kind of bacteria the mouth holds. The germs in the dog's mouth is more harmful to dogs then humans, but the germs in the human's mouth is more harmful to human's then to dog's" just remember you don't need to come up with a direct answer. You just have to come up with a conclusion to your experiment. (by the way the example I told you really is true) Oh and by the way if you can get some agar that will help the bacteria grow ALOT! if not just put the swabs into individual sealed baggies with some water in them. It will take longer that way but it works.

Talking Here's one!!

Here is a similar/easy to do experiment that I posted earlier! It guarentees results. However, change you question to, "Which mouth has more bacteria, a dog's or a humans?" Cuz, as Satfire preiviusly stated, most bacteria in a dog's mouth does not pass to humans. (Watch Discovery Cgannels Mythbusters for more info)
