Default Science Project Idea for You: Cell Size: Surface area and volume

Test: how efficient are big cells are absorbing nutrients vs smaller cells? Use agar cubes and cut them into different sizes. calculate their volumes and their surface areas. Dunk them into a dye for, let's say 30 minutes. Then cut them open to see how much of the interior is dyed. Calculate the volume that is dyed.

Calculate their surface area to volume ratio and graph that ratio on the x-axis with volume dyed on y-axis.

This is the same concept for melting ice cubes: surface area to volume ratio.

Mad Scientist is helpful, nice and has lots of friends here
Default Science Fair Project Idea

Interesting project Dreamer - but perhaps you could explain how the experiment helps demonstrate whether big cells are better able to absorb nutrients, as compared to small cells?

I'm keeping my explanation to these experiments short and detail-free because I want the experimenters to figure out the details and tailor them according to their resources.

But by seeing how much dye has went into the agar cubes, you can see how much big cells absorbed vs small cells. (But it has to be done proportionally. If a 40 mL cell absorbed 10mL, then it's not as good as a 20mL cell which absorbed 10mL.)
