Lightbulb Does sugar prolong the life of cut flowers....?

This is quite a simple project to due, but requires about two week's or so of time. It is: Does sugar prolong the life of cut flowers as opposed to salt? I would really appreciate some feedback on it, as I did this just this year.

Materials:

1. 18 carnations
2. 900 mL water
3. 9 vases/jars
4. 6.75 grams of sugar
5. 6.75 grams of salt
6. Measuring cups

(this is the right amount for about three trials, if you only need to do one, divide everything by 3)

Procedures:

1. Cut the stems of each flower with scissors or knives.
2. Fill three vases each with 100 mL of water.
3. Put 2.25 grams of salt in one vase. Label it salt.
4. Put 2.25 grams of sugar in one vase. Label it sugar.
5. Place four carnations in the vase labeled salt.
6. Place four carnations in the vase labeled sugar.
7. Place four carnations in the vase with no additives.
8. Repeat procedures 1-8 twice.
9. Observe flowers until each die and record how many days the flowers took to die.
10. Record data.

Results:

My results came out with sugar lasting the longest, salt the shortest, and no additives the middle.

I hope this helps some people groping for a simple project to do. I took photos of my flowers every day, you might like to do so too.

If anyone wants to offer suggestions to improve this project or tell me what parts that I should have done a different way, please email me at allaisgod82@mugglenet.com, or reply to this post.

Have fun!

-Alla

Default Great Project

You've aced it Alla.

Good and clear abstract. And of course, I would agree with your findings that sugar does in fact extend the life of plants. Congratulations and thank you for sharing. It would be fantastic if there were more people like you - willing to share your work to help others. Thank you again! You've done us proud!
