Default Blast your ears with sound!

I have done a project to determine which is a better sound insulator, I used an airhorn aimed at a decibel reader packed first in newspaper, then packing popcorn and finally immersed in water. The water allowed the least amount of sound through, why???????? Did it reflect the sound waves off the surface of the water? also if sound travels the worst through air (like in outer space) because the particles are far apart, and best throught solids, because the particles that transfer the sound waves are close together, then ... why can we hear each other better when we are standing in the same room than if we were in separate rooms the same distance apart, but with a wall between us, I am a little confused? thanks

Wink I have an ANSWER for you!

Sound is a type of wave that we cannot see. Like ocean waves, sound waves need a medium to travel through. Sound can travel through air because air is made of molecules. These molecules carry the sound waves by bumping into each other, like Dominoes knocking each other over. Sound can travel through anything made of molecules - even water! There is no sound in space because there are no molecules there to transmit the sound waves. Electromagnetic waves are unlike sound waves because they do not need molecules to travel. This means that electromagnetic waves can travel through air and solid materials - but they can also travel through empty space. This is why astronauts on spacewalks use radios to communicate. Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic wave.
