Default 9th Grade (HS) 3d Earth Cutaway Model Info

Hi everyone,

My son has a project due in about 3 months. It's of a cutaway 3d model of Earth that also has to show tectonic plates in their correct locations, shapes etc.

I want to help him make it look as clean, accurate and appealing as possible. Any ideas on what to make the globe out of, then the interior portions and plates? Internet searches are so slanted toward 3d computer graphical modeling that it's nearly impossible to find information on a "real" object tutorial.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Mike
