Default Desalination With Electricity

Hello, I am a high-schooler looking for a good project, and I think that if you used 4 different plates of elements with different resistances in ohms to electricity and electrocute them in saltwater, you could desalinate the water as well as take the salt off the plates and measure the amounts. However, some kid said that all it would do is create mush and leave me with no salt to record the data. So would my experiment work, or will it do just what the kid said??
