Many fields involve microbiology. There are companies that are developing drugs to cure all sorts of diseases (such as cancer). These require expertise in micro biology.

Also, there is an entire field of engineering/science called bio-engineering. These days, a lot of the cutting edge research is done at the micro level - for example, to figure out how to physically manipulate cells, or how to measure certain signals (such as level of electricity etc) at the cell level -- basically, how to "interface" man made devices with human cells. One of the goals of bio engineering is to help cure diseases or fix all sorts of problems inside the human body.
