Alkali metals
they are soft metals you can cut them with a knife!!

They react violently with water

Wierd i was reading and I came across these facts and I was amazed
because I never would have thought there was a metal you could cut.

P.S. congrats to all the new mentors!!:)

What do you mean by "violently in water?"

SmartyC 12-31-2005 01:49 PM

Vioently with water
If you put them in water the water starts to pop, bubble, and go all over the place. The metal sizzles.:)

how may elements are in this group?

Alkali metals are the first colum in the periodic table of the elements. My favorite part about them is ther are so reactive, they catch on fire if exposed to oxygen. The ironic thing is you can keep them stable by storing them in kerosine.

I believe you are wrong. If they are exposed to water, that's when they re-act violently. I could always be wrong though. :)

You guys are like so totally wrong here~! I had to do this whole Project on stupid Alkali Metals and uhhm alot of tha stuff you wrote about it is soo messed uhhp. 1st there are 6 elements in this group and Hydrogen is not one of them. They are lithium, cesium, sodium, potassium, Rubidium, and francium! Lol duhh they all react with hydrogen tho. You can only cut some of these metals with a knife and thats if they are above room temp or right at it =] When they get with water they dont ((EXPLODE)) they catch fire, spark, or melt.... Wow i didnt know i was this smart... but hope i help someone that wants the right info.

also im not a nerd!!! Lol just a little Fyi =] let me kno if you have a problem.
