In school, we are beginning to read the bok The Giver by Lois Lowry. For those of you who don't know, the book is about a boy growing up in a perfect society. An absolutly perfect society is known as a Utopia. Everyone's idea of a Utopia is different. Remember that, because it is important later. In our class, before beginning to read the book, we were told to create our own Utopian societies, focusing on the five most important areas of civilizations, GOVERNMENT, SUSTENECE, LAW, EDUCATION, and PROTECTION. We split into groups and formed them. This was difficult because every Utopian society has a flaw. A Utopian society has not been created yet, or, if it has been created, we do not know of it. On of the greatest examples of someone trying to create a Utopian society, was Hitler. In his mind, the perfect society was one in which only true germans lived in. Remember, everyone's idea of Utopia is different. So, I challenge each and everyone of you to create a Utopian society of your own and post your thoughts here. It is amazing fun. HAPPY UTOPIA!

P.S. This is not in the correct forum, but, I feel it needs to be near discussions that are similar, which are in this forum.

I agree, Utopia is almost impossible to achieve because of the fact that we are humans. As the human mind goes, we know too much, I think. If a Utopia was attempted, humans already have the nature to do evil. Thus, causeing a non-Utopian environment for others.

I"ll work on an idea, BB.:)

I have only found one example of a Utopia... the Garden of Eden... BEFORE Eve ate the forbiddon fruit! This shows why we cannot create a Utopia... it would be Godlike... only He can create something so pure!

If there would be ever a chance to create so called Uthopia... It would be a world where everybody would Understand. Where everyone would be Happy. One very important thing is>Uthopia is not a place where all your dreams are real... That would be something else, it would be a place called The helll of Ilusions... There's no chance that 2 ppl on this world be happy at the same time. So, it wouldn't be Uthopia anymore. Uthopia should be a world where everybody love, but in the way they know, they have learned. It musn't change ppl. I mean totaly. Just, it will reqire some small changes such as removing that what's not necesary. PPL have to be furious, have to cry, smile, love, be anxsious... That's normal. But sick things should't exsist. Such as wars, killings. This takes us to the place where we realise that even this is human. Yes, it is. So, basicly, Uthopia doesn't exists. Ppl just gave it a wrong name. It's a world called EGO.

true but doesn't "thing tend to happen for a reason"? well but we do need to be sad sometings espacilly cry it helps so being happy all the time is not always good you know...

Utopia would be the worse place to live, to me. Being in a perfect place all the time would mess with everyones minds. No one would have a problem with anyone else, there will be no debates. It wold be like the Steford Wives, but the whole town, or city, or country, or what ever.

There is no need to be happy all the time....or is there?

Mad Scientist 03-23-2006 09:38 AM

Ah...the Stepford Wives
That was an interesting show indeed....SmartyC, thanks for reminding me! I believe that Utopia simply doesn't exist in our physical world. It's not possible for mankind to shape his own destiny perfectly (much less being able to keep it that way...)

Personally,I would like to be happy all the time....that would be kinda cool to me,. But I do agree that it's not possible - in the world that we live in.

Science does however help us make life a little more understandable, and a little more manageable (eg. thanks to the many inventions such as electricity). But some people say that there are indeed many things beyond the reach of science - ie: they cannot be explained adequately through scientific concepts. And then, there are problems that science doesn't seem to be able to solve... Food for thought. :lightbulb:
